ID Tag claims to be the Amber Alert System for pets. All pets should be microchipped of course but not all shelter facilities have adequate scanners. Your pet may be microchipped but the shelter or vet clinic may not be able to find the microchip and thus you will lose an opportunity to be reunited with your pet. In addition to microchips (until a true universal scanner is available everywhere) pets still need to wear tags.
According to the IDTag website:
IDTAG.com is the latest and most advanced pet identification tag available today. Each IDTAG.com pet tag is linked to an online platform using a unique serial number, making the engraving of “stagnant” owner information obsolete. Instead, your pet’s description, photos, videos and health information is stored in your personalized secure online profile along with the primary, secondary and tertiary emergency contact information of your choosing. With access to your online profile, you can keep your pet & contact information up-to-date in “real-time”, from anywhere at any time.
If your pet is lost: One call or click of the mouse and a lost-pet bulletin with photos and descriptions of your pet will be sent to any of our over 13,000 shelters within 50 miles of your pet’s last-known location as well as over a dozen lost pet websites. This instant broadcast of information saves precious seconds during a loss and gives the peace of mind that you are giving your pet the protection it deserves 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
If your pet is found- anyone recovering your pet can simply call our toll-free number or log onto www.idtag.com. By entering the serial number on your pet’s tag, the finder can retrieve the necessary information for your pet to be returned. Through a personalized login to www.idtag.com, you can update and maintain your pet’s information and photos as well as your contact information at anytime from any location. IDTAG.com gives you the flexibility to keep your critical contact information accurate to the minute, even as you travel.
Cost is reasonable at $6.95 a year plus the initial cost of the tag. I like the idea of a pet amber alert but I would check the shelter listing for your zip code to be sure teh shelters in your area are indeed on the list.
Hopefully it is a service you never need!
