Doggie DNA ?
Pictured here is Cooper, he is a medium size dog, his coat has a wire type texture, besides being sooo cute he has a sister named Nora and stayed with us here at the Grove recently. Cooper has had numerous ear infections and other little weird health stuff, so his Veterinarian ( SouthBayVet) requested that the his Mom and Dad do a Canine DNA profile. Certain breeds have proven predisposition to certain health problems, breed specific health testing is rapidly developing thanks to great research projects sponsored by the Canine Health Foundation.
I also wanted to give South Bay big Kudo’s for offering DNA profiling at his clinic ! Shows they are willing to look outside the box, a desire to look at the whole dog and take all the pieces of the puzzle into consideration when looking at treatment and diagnosis!

Many laugh or scoff at the idea of taking the time and money to DNA profile a “mutt”.
There are many rewards when performing canine DNA testing for dogs. One of the most significant is having the answer to the mystery that is locked inside your mixed breed dog! However, the rewards to do not end there!
With the dog breed DNA test, you’ll be able to better understand your pet. Why does he or she do the things that they do? For instance, “Why does my dog run up to a bush, lean forward and lift a paw?” Surprise! Your canine’s breed heritage contains some dominant variation of the sporting-type, “Pointer” in them!
Furthermore, gaining the knowledge that certain breeds cannot, or should, consume certain types of diets will ultimately prevent you from spending hundreds to thousands of dollars at the vet office to care for a sick dog. Knowledge and prevention is key!
While health ailments can affect any breed, certain breeds have proven predisposition to certain health problems. Acquiring DNA breed heritage knowledge will help educate you about your dog and his or her special needs. In turn, every member of the dog/human relationship will benefit!
The Canine Heritage test is from MMI Genomics, one the largest canine DNA labs endorsed by the American Kennel Club. The test requires a simple cheek swab, no blood ! You are welcome to bring your test kit into Friendly Grove and we will help you with the swab and can also take your pets photo to upload to Canine Heritage for your DNA Certificate.
