Diatomaceous Earth

Recently over at Bark n Blog, Shadrach wrote a nice post about the Diatomaceous Earth (DE).

DE is the fossilized remains of algae (diatoms), these remains actually cause hard bodied insects to dehydrate and die…naturally.  The DE causes the insect to dehydrate by breaking down their hard shells.

DE is USDA approved for use in human food storage and regularly added to grain storage to help control beetles.

DE is commonly used to control fleas and used as a natural wormer by Natural Rearing Breeders. DE is a 100% natural organic pesticide.  DE Food Grade is FDA approved for internal and external use in both dogs and humans.

Once a year we use either Natural food grade Boric acid or DE to treat the Grove instead of toxic pesticides.  You might consider researching DE and talking with your veterinarian about using DE instead of pesticides.

Great short summary. I am working on educating people about their options especially since the EPA Advisories earlier this year. I hope you will follow me on Twitter–let me know if you want an advance draft review copy for a review.
