Puppy Mills Can’t be Stopped by New Laws

dogtarget1None of us want puppy mills to exist but PETA and The Humane Society seem bent on trying to pass Dog legislation in every state in “an effort to stop puppy mills” – Not that I believe for one moment that that is their true intention!

This legislation is often labeled something like “anti-puppy mill bill” which of course causes an immediate emotional response and side ways glares from well meaning pet lovers when I say I disagree with the bill !

One of the best explanations of anti breeder legislation and it’s faults was posted over at the Pet Connection earlier this week.  To really understand the issue please take a moment and read Christie Kieth’s full article !

licensing dog and cat breeders does nothing but put a group of people who love dogs and cats — love them fiercely — at odds with those with whom they share the goal of seeing fewer animals die in shelters and improving the lives of dogs and cats. They end up hiding instead of running breed rescue groups and driving in transport relays for rescued animals and raising money for animal welfare and volunteering at the local shelter and whelping the puppies of pregnant rescued animals and fostering orphaned kittens.

In regards to regulation, The Department of Agriculture, if anyone, is the proper authority to regulate animal husbandry not volunteers at shelters or animal control for that matter.

But regulation is not the answer nor are new laws or more animal control officers…

  • Puppy Mills exist for one simple reason – Demand
  • Puppy Mills will only run deeper underground with these laws, which will equal even more abuse and neglect.
  • Puppy Mills will hide from Veterinarians if mandatory spay neuter bills pass.
  • Puppy Mills exist for one simple reason – Demand.

I will repeat it again…Puppy Mills exist for one simple reason – Demand.

If these senators and so called animal activists want to stop Puppy Mills then launch a nationwide educational campaign !  Stop the Demand and those Puppy Millers will be out of business.

It is a very simple process – no demand=no product.
