While bloggers are ranting about specifics in the bill they don’t like, all seem to agree that it is a move in the right direction; individual responsibility and an acknowledgment that any breed is capable of being aggressive.

Scotland’s new bill will replace previous “dangerous breed” laws ! Yeah, now for America ? Think maybe we can figure out it too ?

“You love your pet. You take good care of your pet. How would you feel if the government tried to limit your ability to have pets in your life? …Angry? …Scared? …Betrayed? …Well, it’s happening.

Each year, local, state and federal governments propose thousands of laws that would restrict your ability to own pets – to include pets as vital members of your family. While we believe that some regulations are warranted to ensure that pets are well care for, we also believe that responsible pet ownership should be applauded, supported, and encouraged, not limited!

Unfortunately, many government officials don’t understand how their bills might affect you, the responsible pet owner. Furthermore, they may be basing their decisions on propaganda that, while it seems to call for better pet care, is actually part of an agenda to end pet ownership.

Help us protect responsible pet ownership by defending you and your pets against misdirected and poorly crafted legislation.

Support the “Don’t Mess with My Pet™” campaign by becoming a Member of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC). Your $25 contribution you will help us guard responsible pet ownership…on behalf of you and your non-human family members. As a thank you from us, you’ll receive a free campaign t-shirt.”

Announced today over at Medical News, Vetericyn Inc. launched a New wound and infection product. According to their website:

When your dog has an open wound or infection, Vetericyn should be the product of choice because it is easy to apply into the affected area to treat infection while accelerating healing. Vetericyn works quickly to treat the infections or open wounds. In addition, it is safe as water so it will not harm your dog or the environment. Dogs typically lick their injury so any treatments applied should be non-toxic. Vetericyn is non-toxic so it will not cause injury if it happens to be ingested or licked after application. This is possible because Vetericyn works in the same way as your dog’s immune system. As such, the body recognizes it as a friendly infection-treating ally. Vetericyn also creates an optimal environment for healing.
Wounds treated with Vetericyn have demonstrated a reduction in healing time by up to 60%. Vetericyn significantly increases the oxygen content at the wound site within 30 seconds and maintains that oxygen level for up to 36 hours. This increase in oxygen along with the reduction of infection is responsible for these accelerated healing times. As a one-step cleanser and dressing, it eliminates the need for multiple products while reducing the application time and requirements.
Since it is “no-rinse”, it leaves no film or residue to clean off. And unlike traditional antiseptics and topical antibiotics it does not damage healthy tissue. Finally, it is compatible with most gauzes and acrylics and can be used prior to application of other treatments.

Indications:

Hot spots

Eye infections

Skin irritations

Rashes

Cuts and scratches

Outer ear infections

The Website also includes a number of testimonials and detailed product information. Sounds like good stuff and definitely worth a try next time Rover gets a hot spot !

Hopefully you don’t have to use it but if you do we’d love to hear a review.

Obama killed a fly, OMG Peta is having a tissy fit…Could someone please explain to me why this organization has IRS non-profit status when they are basically a domestic terrorist group and why oh why do so many celebrities endorse them! YUCK !

And to top it off, PETA is protesting our very own Pike Place Market and especially targeting the Fish tossing. The American Veterinary Medical Association conference is coming to Seattle on July 12th and PETA rumors say PETA is gonna protest our market.

I don’t have to tell any of you locals how important fish is in our local culture, way of life or economy.

The fish throwing has gone on here for hundreds of years in different forms when people would fish off scaffolds and throw the fish back to others etc…The Pike Place Fish have been throwing for at least 40 years - The fish throwing attracts alot of people, education about the fish is incorporated into the presentations, they speak about conservation and sooo much more.

It is also a glimpse into the lives of traditional fishermen, they sing both thanks and a wee bit of story telling about how big the fish are but there is hard work and love and thanks for this fish everyday, alot of Seattle families entire livelihoods depend on fish. We know how important they are. If you sat around for any length of time and watched and listened you would hear the fishermen telling people the names of the fish, how important local fisheries are, how to buy from local fisheries, how to help preserve habitats and of course how great they are

I am attending the AVMA Seattle conference and will of course visit Pike Place while there, I would recommend the Salmon – local caught of course – If any of you decide to purchase from the mongers, if you do thanks for supporting local, sustainable fisheries and local fishermen and women…which Washington leads the way in !

hmmm..too much local pride ? anyways the point is… it is not JUST people throwing dead fish around for sport or fun – really do you think we would disrespect something that feeds us, nourishes us, substains us ? PETA is wrong, very wrong. I do hope they show up maybe I can hit one with a fish!!!

In the meantime visit Peta Kills the website dedicated to divulging the truth about Peta! And please tell a friend that Peta is bad, very bad…. Do it …Now…tell a friend !

My dog thanks you !

ps adding this blog entry to my wishlist…cause I wish PETA would implode, shrivel up and disappear…I wish …I wish…

FDA Suspends Temporary Emergency Permit of Pet Food Maker

June 12, 2009

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today it was suspending the temporary Emergency Permit issued to Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food Co., Inc.

Evanger’s, operating in Wheeling, Illinois, deviated from the prescribed process, equipment, product shipment, and recordkeeping requirements in the production of the company’s thermally processed low acid canned food (LACF) products. The deviations in their processes and documentation could result in under-processed pet foods, which can allow the survival and growth of Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum), a bacterium that causes botulism in some animals as well as in humans.

In April 2008, Evanger’s was issued an “Order of Need for Emergency Permit” after the agency determined that the company had failed to meet the regulatory requirements to process a product that does not present a health risk. In June, 2008, FDA issued Evanger’s a temporary Emergency Permit. During inspections conducted between March 2009 and April 2009, FDA determined Evanger’s was not operating in compliance with the mandatory requirements and conditions of the Temporary Emergency Permit.

“The FDA is stopping Evanger’s ability to ship pet food in interstate commerce,” said Dr. Bernadette Dunham. “Today’s enforcement action sends a strong message to manufacturers of pet food that we will take whatever action necessary to keep unsafe products from reaching consumers.”

In order for Evanger’s to resume shipping in interstate commerce, the company must document that corrective actions and processing procedures have been implemented to ensure that the finished product will not present a health hazard.

Botulism is a powerful toxin that affects the nervous system and can be fatal. The disease has been documented in dogs and cats. Signs of botulism in animals are progressive muscle paralysis, disturbed vision, difficulty in chewing and swallowing, and progressive weakness to the body. Death is usually due to paralysis of the heart or the muscles used in breathing.

While FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is responsible for regulating all human and animal LACF processing, FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine has authority over animal feed and foods. The two centers are collaborating on this enforcement action.

The Japan Automobile Research Institute tested the Sleepypod and found it withstood crashes of up to 25 mph – The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards mandates that 2-legged children car seats withstand 30 mph crashes.

Sleepypod has modified its design to increase the safety even more and will be re-testing soon to see if they can get to the 30 mph standard.

You can read the full study and watch videos of the test at Sleepypods site.

Sleepypod is definetly moving in the right direction for pet safety but their seats are only designed for little dogs, what about us big dog owners ? Well, hopefully they will get our big guys covered soon!
